Bringing in major co-star John Houseman from the film of the same name (for about 20 early episodes, anyway), a format is quickly established by which the viewer would follow a group of law students through four years of grueling attempts to gain knowledge and skill.  At least one knowledgeable friend of mine notes that the television show outdid the film in depth and breadth.  It's not yet out in DVD to my knowledge.
